The Friendly Backpacker Group was formed in 1997 and opened their first hostel shortly after. Seeing the potential of their product reach new heights the second hostel, The Greenhouse Backpacker, was opened in 2001. The Greenhouse is now the flagship of the Friendly Group and in 2005 it was awarded the Best Backpacker Accommodation in Australia award at the Australian Tourism Awards. In late 2006 the Friendly Group opens the newest of their products, with the Northern Greenhouse, in Cairns, set to again raise the bar in backpacker accommodation standards.
