Our Green Commitment

Our first hostel in Melbourne was named The Greenhouse backpacker because of our environmental values and commitment to the community. Our company is committed to providing outstanding backpacker accommodation aware of our guest’s needs and the planet’s needs.

Here are some of the initiatives we have set up at both Northern Greenhouse and Greenhouse Backpacker:

• Conducted a Carbon Audit for property
• Green Star Rating at The Northern Greenhouse
• Installed Water Saving Showerheads
• Installed Low wattage light bulbs on timers to conserve energy
• Use biodegradable cleaning products
• Educate our Guests to be environmentally conscious. Check out our water saving tips and recycling reminders around the hostel!
• Use recycled office paper and recycled ink cartridges
• Collect wine corks and mobile phone batteries to recycle
• Committed to recycling throughout the property
• Shop locally at the markets and promote local businesses
• Promote cultural awareness of the local indigenous peoples by providing an information board outlining different aspects of their cultures
• On our famous Walking Tour we provide culturally sensitive information about the local Indigenous Cultures as well as other migrant cultures to Melbourne.
• Encourage environmentally sustainable activities I.e. bike hire, walking tours, football in the park etc.
• Send lost property to charity groups for the homeless
• Provide a book exchange to recycle books
• Donate to various charities such as the Tsumani Relief Effort, Chinese Earthquake Appeal and Child Sponsorship
• Completed the Waste Wise Community Program
